Greetings Growers!

As one of the suppliers and members of JUST Community Market Co-op, I’d like to thank you for checking out our catalogue. We have managed to pack a huge variety of heritage plant starts into our greenhouses.  This year, my partner Henri and I are really excited to be growing food and some starts in our new home-built northern greenhouse.

We attached this greenhouse directly to the south side of our home, using the designs of Carol Ford and Chuck Waibel, who generously share their knowledge in the “Northlands Winter Greenhouse Manual”. These Minnesota growers have had a small but successful winter vegetable CSA for 5 years and have just released a second edition of their book. It’s all about growing food in a northern climate with limited energy inputs by capturing and saving as much solar heat as possible and by choosing the right plants – cold weather plants with low light requirements that like cool crisp air.

We got the greenhouse up and running in late January and have been enjoying fresh greens for several weeks. Never thought I’d say this, but we can’t wait until next winter. But enough about that….the greenhouse is full of baby tomatoes, peppers, onions and herbs and it’s time to turn our energies outside and cram as much food-growing enjoyment into our 90 frost-free days!

Garden on, Manitoba!

  1. It’s very exciting to discover your winter greenhousing plans, something I’ve been hoping / encouraging for (others to do, lol) for years. I was enthused by Carol and Chuck’s presentation at Growing Local a few years ago (?) and remember Paulette there too asking a million questions 🙂 Glad to hear they have been so helpful to get a project like this in our region. Very warming!
